KNIfe care
MRC Customs knives may be pretty, but they are designed to be USED.
Follow these basic guidelines to ensure your new custom knife lasts for generations:
Cleaning
DO NOT PUT YOUR HANDMADE KNIFE IN A DISHWASHER!
Here’s why.
- Dishwasher detergent is designed to break down oils, grease, and food. Your knife handle and blade are protected by a food-safe oil. Don’t strip your knife of its armor.
- High dishwasher temperatures can warp varying handle materials and degrade the epoxy that helps hold it together.
- Collisions with other utensils and cookware can dull your knife’s wickedly sharp edge.
Simply wash your knife with soap and water using a sponge and promptly dry
Rust VS. Patina
High Carbon steel knives will rust quickly if left wet. Stainless steel will also rust if left wet, just far “less” quickly.
A “Patina” will likely develop on your knife over time. Akin to a leather baseball glove or jacket, the patina chronicles the knife’s use and gives it character. Some people prefer to force a patina because of its visual appeal. A patina may present itself as darker spots on your steel. This is the steel’s reaction to interactions with the acids in food. The patina will also help create a protective barrier on the surface of your blade steel.
Sharpening
How you use your knife will determine how often you need to sharpen it. If used for its intended purpose and on wooden or plastic cutting boards, you will be surprised at how long it will hold a razor edge.
All MRC Customs knives, come with lifetime access to FREE sharpening through MRC Customs LLC. If you’d like to sharpen it yourself, avoid pull-through sharpeners and maybe watch a few YouTube videos beforehand.
